Courtside 8
Portland, OR
Courtside Eight is a Third Prize, Citation winning entry, in the Courtyard Housing Competition sponsored by the City of Portland Bureau of Planning. The submission was selected from more than 200 entrants. Within a 100’ x 100’ urban neighborhood infill site, the proposal provides eight efficient residences that afford programmatic and economic diversity called for in the competition brief.
The project concentrates outdoor space for the residential community into one central courtyard. The building massing permits optimum daylight exposure for the courtyard. Shared and private outdoor uses are defined with ground plane sectional variation and vegetation. A portion of the courtyard is covered by elevated single-story residences, concentrating parking to a shared multi-use covered area. All residences’ individual living areas front the courtyard, encouraging security and community. The individuality of residences is expressed by carving between the repeated units, allowing daylight to penetrate deeper into the units and affording corner view windows.
