This private residence, stable, and office sit at the edge of a one-hundred and forty acre meadow near the town of Hamilton, Montana. Situated between the Bitterroot and Sapphire Mountains, the project is oriented around a court and on an east-west axis. This orientation is similar to that found in the simple vernacular ranch structures and creates outdoor living environments that are both sheltered and open to the distant mountain view.
Like the ranch structures, the two buildings that create the courtyard are single story with living spaces stretched along their lengths. This strategy allows all spaces access to the southern sun and creates a favorable roof orientation for solar energy. It also allows the clients to create varied experiences within the house and sheltered outdoor spaces that swing between the Sapphires and the Bitterroots.
