North Beach Residence
This residence, for a young couple and their three daughters, is located in a developed neighborhood on a sloping site with views north and west towards the San Juan Islands and the Olympic Mountains. Compact in footprint the project reaches upward to seize the views and exposure.
Instead of stacking the vertical circulation, the stairways shift at each level creating exploratory movement between interconnected and light filled volumes. At the summit, a sky lounge and a roof top deck that is carved into the form providing outdoor space that seeks to simultaneously expose and protect.
The geomorphic form is sculpted in response to view orientation, programmatic expansion, multi-level spaces, solar control, and respect for adjacent properties. Clad in horizontal stained cedar with deep set window and door apertures, the project is crafted as an abstracted interpretation of local typology and building tradition.
